Loaded the ole boat with all the usual gear and Da FishBoy, my fishing buddy and comical sidekick of about 18 years (so far) for a Saturday trip down Dularge. With him in college now we haven't had many chances to make a father-and-son trip for a while so while we had the opportunity and 'envie we launched.
Tailing us was MacAttack and his lovely wife, Ms Debbie.
I was planning to make the trip to the Decade area but the forecast of increasing wind made me head south a few miles. For those not familiar with Lake Decade, it isn't very nice when you have wind...it can be downright dangerous.
Our conditions were overcast-to-rainy, 5-10s out of the south, high water with a good falling tide.
We started out in the rain fishing the shorelines in Mud Lake where I've done quite well, John and Debbie picked up a few reds n 'heads on shrimp, us: nothing on artificials.
We then tried around some reefs lining deep bayous in Lake Merchant, John and Debbie - not a bite, us: plenty of 10-inch specks and a pesky croaker on shrimp.
With the wind and tide picking up, we moved back into the marsh to a location that apparently is a "secret spot" to a couple of dozen people...I'd done quite well on fat specks the last few times I'd been there with similiar conditions.
On Mac's first cast (it seems), he drug up a nice fat speck....surely we would put something in the igloo here! Nope.
I eased up farther in the marsh to fish a deep hole near one of those immoral lease gates...I've caught more reds in that hole than anywhere else in Dularge.
I began fishing around the hole as Joseph slapped on a cork, loaded up on shrimp and cast in the middle of a small trenausse with about 8 inches of water...it was always too shallow to hold any fish.
Boop! Down goes the cork! fat red about 6 pounds.
Cast again-
Boop! Down goes the cork! stout sheephead that went about 4
<Dad muscles in and takes his spot> *imagine cricket sounds*
Joe casts 2 feet to my left...
Boop! 18 inch red <does flounder dance>
He reloads and casts 2 feet behind me...
Boop! 3 pound 'head <does flounder dance>
Boop! 3 pound 'head <does flounder dance>
Boop! 20 inch red <takes victory lap around boat after flounder dance>
Not much else to say except it was a great day with my son and good friends out on the water...the fish didn't want to play with me that day but some day...yes, some day soon, they will tangle with the MarshManiac.
Lookin' for Decade next month!
