Went out in search of some trout Friday morning, but wound up switching to plan "B" as the morning progressed. Launched out of Quintanna Marina around 7:00 am and headed out to a few spots that i had been catching some trout around from recent weeks. Once we pulled up and started drifting, i found that the water conditions were not the ones that i was looking for, the temp was 53 deg and the water was very dirty and Fresh, so we decided to head towards the pass to try and find some clearer water with a little more salinity. Stopped by dry reef on the way and made a drift, not a single bite. Continued on through the pass, and was flagged down by an oyster boat to see if we had any allen wrenches because his gear was stripped on his wench to lift the basket. I wish i could have helped him, but i had forgot all of my tool back at the house, but we did buy a sack of oysters that they had just pulled from the water. We then headed out to some of the South marsh island well platforms to go try for some trout, water was still too dirty so we decided to break out the fresh market shrimp that we had picked up as back up, and went after the reds. We idled up close to one of the well heads and cut the engine to see which way the current was taking us, my buddy decided to throw a bait in as we were settting up, not 3 seconds in the water, and Bam ,Red fish number 1 in the boat. After we drifted off and found the way the current was going, we went anchor on the up current side, we then proceded to fill the ice chest with reds and Drum almost every cast. We stayed there at that one spot for a couple hours steady catching and throwing back the small ones and the Bigger drum as well, when the bite slowed down at that platform, we motored over to the next one to try and finish off our Red fish limit, picked up one more nice one there, then headed to the next platform. we only had 4 shrimp left and 2 reds shy of our limit, so we had to make it count. We started pulling up some small drum untill i was down to the last sliver of my ration of bait, i chunked it down and a minute later my rod started screaming peeling out line, after 25 minutes of horsing it in my budy tried to net the big beast to the boat. Wound up breaking my net in half trying to pull it closer to the boat, which sucked, but was a fun fight to bring in the 70+lb Big Nasty. Once we got it in the boat, snapped a pic and heaved it over the side. Had a great trip to finish off the year. Hope everyone has a good New Year in 2012, May everyone stay with Tight Lines!!!
